I'm glad this question came up, and I'd like to take it one step farther.
I have a '89 325ic that will be needing brakes soon and would like to know
about improving my braking with aftermarket pads and/or rotors (I need
both). Or would it be more desirable to do everything (pads, rotors and
calipers)? I'd like my car to stop at least as well as my wife's 2001
Beetle!

Quick questions on brakes:
I've had my '88 325e for 3 years now and it's been that long since I've
touched the front brakes. When I bought it, I went ahead and replaced the
pads and rotors, not knowing the history of the front brakes.
The pads are looking slim now, and I am contemplating pad replacement only,
vs. pads and rotors. How does one decide whether to just replace the pads
and turn the rotors, or replace both?
45k miles have passed since the last brake job.
Any advice is welcome. Thanks!
