E34 throttle surge help

miles2go,

One possible cause for ths could be an issue with the tranny. There is a
known problem with that tranny that is caused by an internal seal leaking.
BMW refers to your symptom as pendulum shifting - engine surging up to ~500
rpm while at cruise, in a tech. bulletin.

When shifting into reverse do you also have a delay of about 3 seconds
before the gear engages on a cold start? (especially after nose pointed
downhill)

There is a seal replacement kit that is relatively inexpensive, but the
tranny has to come out (~14 hours) to replace it.
