<E28> engine down - suggestions sought

Hello, all!

A normal 7-hour drive from visiting family over the weekend turned 
into a 13-hour ordeal as I nursed my 1985 535i home.
The report from the garage late this afternoon - at minimum a blown 
head gasket - this with 250,000 miles on the engine!

This past summer I pondered the idea of a rebuild with a engine 
with more "beef" to it.  That takes some time - which puts me in a 
bind as this is my only car.  In terms of getting the car back on the 
road ASAP, what engine options are available?  I'd love to have 
something more than the original engine, but to do so - I'm not 
looking at an "ASAP" situation.  Maybe I'm wrong.
