Are you sure it's the caliper carrier and not the pads?
What pads do you have: OEM or aftermarket? 
I know my PBR Deluxe pads are rattling on my E30 because they are not a
perfect fit.

Old pins would need replacement unless the thread is stripped and you can
not torque them to BMW specs (22? ft.#s). If you can bolt the caliper to the
carrier without any problems, the pins are fine.

Put the front end of the jack stands and start shacking the front suspension
piece by piece. 
It could be the front sway bar links, or the shields, or the pads - the
three usual suspects. Could also be something else loose under the car
(rusted cat, exhaust shields, etc).

IIRC, I don't think so. The guide bolts attach the caliper to the carrier.
