Bob,
I once had the same problem on my VW Scirocco (another 4-cylinder buzz bomb
;) that turned out to be bad engine mounts. The engine would shift around
and since exhaust manifold was becoming a mount it would shake loose. 
Check your engine/transmission mounts!
