RE: E30 highway vibrations

Try this:
1)Inspect all wheel bearing(the front make a low hum when worn out. to test,
take it down an empty road and slolom the car at about 20MPH...pay attention
to the hum when you turn into the direction...If you hear the noise when you
turn left, your loading up the right bearing, thus it needs replacing.
Vise-versa for the right.

2) Does it vibrate past 80?...how about under load or under coast
conditions...Vibration under load and coast usually points to driveline and
vibrations that come and go point to tires & wheels/hubs/bearings

Anyway it sounds like you have a wheel bearing problem

Subject: E30 highway vibrations

In the past week or two I've been getting progressively worse vibrations
during highway driving in my '89 325i (about 130k mi, 5spd). It comes
and goes, some days vibrating during the daily commute to work and some
days not.

Here's how it goes:

I begin to feel mild vibrations around 45 or 50 in both the steering
wheel, shift knob, and a little in the gas pedal when the vibrations get
worse. If I increase speed to 60 it gets worse and I get a more serious
vibration and a slight hum. The vibration then varies in severity all
the way up to 80.

I originally thought I just needed to get my wheels re-balanced, but the
vibration feels more like it's in the drivetrain.

Anybody have any ideas?

I'm taking the car in to get new brake pads in the next few days, and
will ask them to look at this, but I'd prefer to have an idea of what
kind of stuff may be wrong.

Along those lines, anybody have good/bad experiences with Stuttgart
Motors in Lexington, KY?

Thanks in advance.
