Replacing the steering rack is a fairly easy job with standard hand
tools
and jack stands. I replaced the rack on my '91 318 a few years back
with a
rebuilt unit in an evening. I recommend you have a Bentley manual and
replace the tie rod ends at the same time. If you search the web
should be
able to find a how to write up. Another popular option with the go
fast
crowed is to use the rack from an E36 which has a quicker steering
ratio.
