E36: Help! Can't open hood!!

I need some major help guys!

Today I went for an oil change and my hood would not open. There's tension on
the cable inside the car, but by pulling on it, it's not releasing the main
hood lock / hinge. Is there any way of opening the hood? I have looked in my
Haynes manual which is pretty much useless. What should I do? Any help,
advise..  anything is greatly appreciated!
