E28 hesitation

Our '85 528e (which we have owned since new--130K miles) is hesitating or 
cutting out when going up hill, especially with the A/C on.  The only way to 
avoid the problem is to be very, very careful with changes in pressure on 
the accelerator.

I'm not a mechanic, and don't have a local person whom I trust to work on 
the car.  The closest good shop is 65 miles away.
