how tire size affects tire wear

How does tire size affect tire wear?  Does a larger (18 inch, for example) 
tire wear faster because it has less total rubber?  Is the contact patch of 
an 18 inch tire that much different from that of a 17 inch tire?  In 
talking about tire wear with the service guy at Tate yesterday, he 
commented (about my worn 245/40/17 rear tires), "well, they're 17s after all".
