Euro Car Rental Info Needed

Hi,

I'm about to spend 1 week in the UK and 2 weeks in 
Germany/Switzerland/France. I'm interested in renting car(s) while I'm 
there. I understand from relatives that the best places to rent in Germany 
are at the major airports. Since I'm taking mostly rail what suggestions do 
you have for availability/models, etc. Which cars should I avoid? There 
will be 3 of us traveling together. Any other suggestions for Euro travel 
in general would be most appreciated.
