e36 M3 - fuel sender

A fuel sending unit on my 95 M3 just failed, for the THIRD time.

Apparantly this is a common problem, but at an installed cost of $285.00 per
incident I am wondering if there is anything I can do about this.

I understand that there are actually 2 sending units a left and a right.
Why 2? Just to get a better "averaged" reading?
The next time 1 of the 2 fail, is there anything that can be done to use
just the remaining good one?
Are there any third party replacement parts that are more reliable?
Is it difficult to replace these parts, and is it reasonable for the dealer
to charge me $135.00 for the part and $150.00 for the labor?

Since I plan on keeping this car for alot more years, any advise that may
save me some money in the future will be most appreciated.

Thanks in advance for any input

Steve
