Idle Problem

A co-worker has a 1998 323i, with 77k miles (really!).  He's currently 
experiencing a problem where the engine won't idle.  He needs to keep some 
pressure on the accelerator pedal in order to prevent the engine from 
stalling.  Off idle, the engine runs fine.

The check engine light had come on, and a shop pulled the codes, which 
indicated an oxygen sensor problem, so he had that replaced.

He suspects the idle control valve, which is a definite possibility.

Are there any other known problems with this engine, that can cause it to 
not idle?  Perhaps an air leak past the airflow meter?
