Tachometer problem - 88 325is

Hi,
The tachometer is showing higher RPM than actually engine is running.e.g
3500 whereas it should be 2500. This happened all of a sudden. No changes
to any wiring were made except disconnecting the battery to replace fuel
sender in the tank. Any tips?
