Your shifting problem should be external, most likely in the shift linkage
support.  The external shift linkage rod (from the back of the transmission
to the bottom of the lever) is supported by a stamped steel plate.  The
plate attaches at the top back of the transmission case.  It is probably
cracked which will mean rewelding or replacement.  However, sometimes, the
bolts just fallout.

Take a look there; its not that big a deal to repair.
