Cold E34 , as in: no heat

On my morning drive I was disappointed to discover that my '95iT (33k mi.) had
no heat. I tried turning up the thermostat to the detent all the way to the
right, I tried restarting the car and I tried using some, um, motivational language,
but still nothing but cold air.
My temperature gauge showed a normal operating temperature.
What gives?
