You need to be aware of the cylinder wall corrosion issue with the early to
mid 90s BMW V-8s. In short, the high sulphur content in North American gas
caused corrosion in the cylinder walls of nikasil alloy engines. I believe
the '95 540i was one of those cars.
The result is a loss of compression and power. BMW had to replace a lot of
blocks under warranty (extended as a secret warranty). The only way to
determine if the engine is effected is to do a leakdown test.
