John,
No offense taken. I didn't realize that it is so easy to move the
steering rack. And, I was also under the impression that moving the
steering rack would upset the alignment. The manuals (Bently included)
seem to suggest having an alignment after touching any
suspension/steering component. Hopefully I never have to do the job
again, but if I do, I think I will try your procedure.

When I have done this in the past, I have always dropped the oil pump
into the pan while the pan is on the car. I suppose moving the steering
rack solves this problem! But, my procedure did work well, albeit a
little bit tricky putting the pump back on with the oil pan in place!
Thanks for the comments.
