Stepper motor Steve

Steve,

I don't know if there is any crossover, but:

Alfa Romeo 164s produced between 1989-93 had similar stepper motor problems.
There are two stepper motors in the 164 dash. One for the temperature
control and one for directing air to sets of vents. Bosch made the stepper
motors with nylon gears that wear out over time and create a clicking sound
as the gear teeth slip against each other. The stepper motors don't cost a
vast amount, but to replace them you have to pull off the entire 164 dash to
get to them. $700-$1000 replacement including labor.

Alfa 164 from 1994-1997 don't have this problem. Luckily I owned a 1994.

SOme clever Alfisti in Australia developed a remedy for the problem by
machining a set of gears out of metal. You replace them once, and never
have to do it again.

Check out his website to get more info and see if maybe the problems are
related. You can order sets of gears from him.

Maybe Lucas should have his "Prince of Darkness" title removed and it should
be given to Bosch!!!!
