Hmm let me look...
E21 1020 kg (316) to 1190 kg (323i)    And still heavier than an
'02
E30 1000 kg  (315) to 1260 kg (M3/325i)
E36 1250 kg (compt) to 1560 kg (US M3)  More than an early 728!!!
and E46 ~1400 kg  to ~1600 

This is progress?? 
But I guess the new 2002 has gone the way of the M10
