The V8 M3 at Daytona was built by Tom Milner and the PTG people. It's
powered by an M5 engine with slightly modified pistons, rods, a cam and I
think a dry sump. The car will be run by Tony Jennings and JET Motorsports
during the Grand Am Races this season. The engine didn't go into the car
until last Saturday in Winchester, VA at PTG. A group of folks from the
Blue Ridge and National Chapters of the BMW CCA were fortunate to have
scheduled a tour/visit to PTG the day that the engine was to be put in the
car. So they allowed us to get in their way while the engine was put in the
M3. They didn't expect to test until Thursday. They had quite a weekend
considering. Tom told us that the ALMS cars for PTG and Schnitzer will have
a purpose built 4 L V8 built by BMW Motorsport. He described the engine as
extremely small. It was such a great experience to see them work on the car
and now watch it do well at Daytona a week later.
I think this will be an interesting season for us BMW fans.
