Thanks to everyone for the opinions. I don't have the arm rest/pass through
on my car, so I can't get sound through that way. Has anyone seen/been able
to make a sealed enclosure for 8"s small enough to bolt up to the stock rear
location?
I found the lowest price for the JL Stealthbox system around here (Orange
County, CA) to be $369.
In the front I am putting the Diamond Audio M561 6.5" 2 way component set in
Q-Logic kick panel pods.
An option for rear fill with subs coming through the stock rear holes might
be a full range set enclosure (non-component) top mounted on the package
shelf behind the headrests - I might start with the subs first and see how
it sounds.

I have a '91 525i completely stock (until recently). I replaced the
factory head
unit with a Blaupunkt Toronto CD head unit. It was the one unit that was
able to
maintain the original looks of the dash (the red LED was fully adjustable as
to match
the rest of the instruments). The factory amp and speakers were all
replaced. I
chose a Kenwood KAC-859 (5 channel; 4x40, 1x 120) amp, very clean and
controllable power. The front speakers were replaced with MB Quart PSC 213
and the rear with MB Quart PSC 113. These things ROCK! I wasn't sure if
replacing the speakers were going to be noticeable, but they were. Finally,
I
wrapped it up with a Soundstream SPL-10 ported from the trunk to the
passenger
compartment (completely stealth and less than 1.0 cu.ft.). Fold the rear
arm rest down, remove the padding and metal knock
out for the ski bag (both are perforated) and voila, instant portal for a
sub. I had the
crew at Sound Sensations in Marietta, GA do all the work. The whole
installation
focused on the cleanliness and ability to maintain a stealth-like
appearance.
I spent a year researching different installations and budgets. This fit my
pocketbook
the best and achieved my immediate aspirations for improved sound quality
and
volume.
