supposedly there is thing called VG2 detection for detecting radar 
detectors but i don't know a whole lot about it.  i've heard that the 
valentine one is VG2 invisible.

not living in virginia, i don't know for sure, but i've heard they
confiscate radar detectors.  many people with valentines carry a
cheap $20 detector to hand over in case an officer sees your detector.

only virginia and washington, DC outlaw radar detectors.  they're legal
everywhere else.

btw, my valentine one is worth every penny i paid for it.  if you're going
to get one, you might as well get one that really works.
