Replacing rod & main bearings only...

A quick question, because 1) I'm too busy to look
right now, and 2)the garage floor has slush, ice, and
water all over it....
Over the summer, the water pump blew out on my 535i.
By the time my wife realized it, the engine had gotten
pretty hot. After the pump was replaced, I realized
that there is a leetle more noise in the lower end,
which is even more noticable on very cold days here in
Chicago.
The Question:
Is it possible to pull the oil pan off the bottom,
providing access to the rod and main bearings without
having to pull the engine out of the car? I've done
this before with other cars...just don't know about
the oil pan clearance on the 535i.
There is no need to do the top end; it's just fine,
with great compression, no excessive oil use, etc).
I'm sure some will disagree with this approach, but
hey! It's _my_ car! ;')
Thanks for constructive advice.
