My '98 323iC did this too. It was traced to the trunk lid/conv
top cover (boot) interlock that prevents you from opening the
trunk when the boot is up, and really messing up your paint job!
Re-close the boot and the trunk firmly and if you still have the
problem, check that the microswitch that detects the boot being
open is functioning and adjust if necessary.
Also, to Steve R. and Todd, who recommended Simple Green, I second
that! It's cheap, works great when used full strength, and has
caused no detectable harm to either my summer or winter wheels.
