BMW's are notorious (cars & bikes alike) for a 5-8% error in the speedo
reading.  All you've done is reduce that by increading your tire
size.....and effectively your gear ratio.  By changing to the 245/40-17 from
the 225/50-16 the circumfrence of your tires are .57% less than stock which
is enough to make up that kind of a difference.
