Evan,
I'd check/replace the main relay. The main relay supplies battery voltage
to the injectors on one set of contacts and the fuel pump on the other set
of contacts.
Has the CO and idle been set correctly and recently.
If the idle adjustment is set without bridging the throttle switch the idle
control valve may run out of range, can cause the idle irregularities and
the engine may stall/die.
If the CO/AFM adjustment has yet to be set using pin 5 ( with an
integrating/averaging voltmeter) of the diagnostic connector the DME & O2
sensor can run open loop. The Motronic 1 units are unable to compensate for
excess CO range, do not have an engine check indicator and without checking
the Diagnostic connector pin 5 the DME may be running open loop which can
cause idle problems.

Subject: E28 M5 Problem
A friend has an '88 M5 that has been dying on him in traffic. Symptoms
include oscillating idle, the car will run fine and then die, sometimes
restarts sometimes doesn't. He's replaced all of the usual suspects, e.g.,
rotor cap, plugs, wires, O2 sensor, fuel pressure reg., etc. Any ideas?
Could a faulty DME cause these symptoms?
TIA
Evan
