Forget the naysayers, if you want one buy it.  You know what?  I have
mainly owned Hondas, Mazda RX-7s and BMWs, and guess what, the BMW parts
are no more expensive than the others (definitely cheaper than Mazda).
Know what else?  The BMW is a hell of a lot more car.

As far as reliability, if you look at the numbers, the newer BMWs are
actually more reliable, with the exception of a few models.

I suppose for fuel economy you are concentrating on the e30s, but the
e28 5 series is a super car too, and they seem to be in better shape,
maybe owned by more mature people?  Anyway, keep those in mind, they are
really nice cars, and their are bargains to be had.  The king of the
e28s is the 535is, well really the M5, but they are pricey, and the
535is is just about as good a car.

Sometimes a BMW enthusiast will give you a better deal if he thinks you
will apreciate and maintain the car.

Any older will require more maintainence and parts replacement, but you
feel much better about when you money is going into a high quality car.
