Air in fuel line...

I've been having a problem lately with by '87 L7. If I'm going up a
hill (20 degrees or more) and the car hasn't been running for very long,
the car has a tendency to die and not start up again for hours. This
usually happens with 1/3 of a tank of gas or less and I have to abruptly
jolt the throttle (say accidentally while going over a bump). A
mechanic has told me that both fuel pumps work and that this could be
caused by air in the fuel line. Once I fill the car up with gas, it
will start after about 30 tries. What can this be caused by and how can
I fix it? thanx,
