DFW Lonestar Club Dyno Day part 2!

The Lonestar BMWCCA held it's second dyno day in three weeks on 07/29/00.
Both events were held at renowned Ferrari shop Norwood Auto Craft in Dallas.
Bob Norwood is known throughout the U.S. as one of, if not THE best Ferrari
tuner(s) in the nation. Once again his shop was overrun with Lonestar club
members and other car aficionados for a day filled with tall tales, fast cars,
carbon monoxide and methanol(!) fumes, and most importantly, THE TRUTH,
as told by a Dynojet 248C chassis dynamometer..

Those that arrived early in the morning were able to hear the melodious tones
of several Ferrari 308s, a Norwood P4 replica car, a 288 GTO, a 720 hp Dodge Viper,
and a methanol burning twin turbo F50 owned by the John Carmack, inventor of the
computer game "Doom" as Bob fired them up one by one and drove them out of the
shop and onto the parking lot.. Still inside are two cars being prepped this year's
event at the Bonneville Salt Flats which occurs a scant two or three weeks from now..

The steady stream of Bimmers on the dyno began with the sinister black 95 E36M3
of John Bergstrom. Since his change from an OBDII M3 sedan, John has bemoaned his
95 car's lack of torque. From the first pull, it was evident that John's butt
dyno was correct, as his car was considerably down on torque, and is suspected
that a faulty VANOS system is to blame.. John was footnote to have dynoed his
car, as without the dyno graph's to show it, it would have been very difficult
to diagnose his problem.. John was heard muttering "I'll be back" as he now
will tirelessly seek the solution to his VANOS problem. Steve Huey's freshly
repainted M6 was next, and certainly held it's own for a car with over 170K on the dial..

The E36 M3 parade to the dyno continued with Lowell Seaton and Mark Zenz
putting up some robust numbers. Mark Zenz brought his Shark Injector and
showed it off to the group. He ran his car with the Shark software and
unsuccessfully tried to download the original software, but was unable
to trick the adaptive memory of the OBDII Siemens Motronic. He will return
another day to get baseline numbers... David Greschner's M3/4 automatic
put out 203 hp with air filter and shows there is very little added drivetrain
loss when opting for the slushbox. At Bob's suggestion, for grins he did a run
with NO air filter, and promptly gained nearly 8 rwhp! Don't try this at
home folks, as the street is no place to be without at least some sort of
filter, but the lesson was learned.. it sure seems an aftermarket free flowing
filter would indeed make more hp on the E36M3!

In real M3 (read: E30 M3) news, Mark Hammons returned with a quest to show that
his car was ill three weeks ago.. The results were mixed. With newly adjusted
fuel pressure, and new plugs, wires etc, he gained 10 hp and had a much smoother
curve, but was still a little low.. It appears his motor is no longer running
lean, but Mark advised there that more adjustments are in the near future. The car
owned by club VP Pete Schmitz showed some interesting numbers. His first pull was a lowly
149 hp... A second run showed a bhp gain. A third run showed a bhp (!) gain to
158.5 hp... Everyone called for him to keep on going until the numbers dropped
off, but Pete was satisfied (if not a little afraid of hearing his S14 at 7500 rpm
and being outside the car as opposed to in it!). Bob Norwood recommended the
"Italian Tuneup" for both these gentlemen as they both tend to baby their cars
around town. Clearly Pete's car was responding!

Shaun Pamplin's E30 318 showed good strong numbers over the factory ratings, as
evidence his Jim C software is beneficial. Dan Chenault, who also leases an E46,
decided to bring his Dodge Ram with Vortec power. There were a few tense moments
as he loaded his custom painted truck onto the lift and the trunk was lifted into the
air towards a sprinkler head on the ceiling. His truck had a few inches of clearance,
and he promptly found that yes, he does indeed have the stump pulling torque he needs
for towing! Mike Fleischer brought his Ferrari 348, which of course looked quite at
home at Norwood's facility. The whine of a Ferrari motor in full song is certainly
a beautiful sound indeed!

Returning to (what else?) the other E36 cars, Dean Schreier's red M3 with shiny superb-
looking and sounding Active Autowerke exhaust did not destroy the dyno this time.
The car showed less than 1 hp gain over his baseline with factory exhaust. This came
as little surprise, as most of us are aware that better breathing is needed to make
use of exhaust modifications when it comes to BMW's.. Speaking of better breathing,
Dean removed an internal baffle in the factory airbox and gained 3 hp. His car also
gained another 4 hp with no air filter. The results below show the run with air filter IN
and baffle removed. Paul Marshall brought the newest of his trio of M3's, and his car's
numbers were on par with other car's in stock condition. We all knew it anyway, but it
clearly is not the car but the driver that makes Paul so quick at the autocross course!

Guillaume Garrigue posted the 95 M3 highest numbers from day 1 or 2, with his K & N
cone setup showing a 4 rwhp gain with a heat shield in place. Last but not least
is "Mach V", the red E36 M3 owned by Chris Griffith.. His car has an ECIS intake as
the only engine modification known, and it put up some blistering numbers and even had
more torque than horsepower! With his car being the 12th E36M3 and 14th S5x power plant
that I have seen on the dyno in three weeks, I am astounded at the numbers his car
put out with factory software. His car is currently the Lonestar club's TOP DAWG E36 M3
(barring supercharged cars)!

For all of you that missed the event, Dyno Day part II was even more popular than
Dyno Day part I. Once again the group was able to eat lunch with Bob Norwood, see
a lot of trick cars, and learn more about their own machine or others that are
similar. After all the BMWs were done, those that stayed late into the night
were able to see the F50 of Carmack on the dyno... Once on the rollers, it was
obvious that this car's power is in a different league, as it lurched forward
against the straps and the rear hunkered down with every application of the throttle!
With methanol fumes in the air, and the occasional backfire to really get one's
attention, the F50 spun out nearly 615 rwhp and 400 foot-lbs of torque. This translates
to 730hp at the front assuming 16% drivetrain loss!!

As event organizer, I would like to thank all those that came and participated,
especially all the men who put their cars on the rollers. We had 100% attendance
for those that signed up to run their cars! Thanks also goes to Bob Norwood for
a fantastic locale, and allowing Bimwads to wander around willy nilly throughout
the shop from 9am until as late as 8pm! In order to convert rwhp numbers
to flywheel #s, Bob Norwood suggested to assume 16% loss and divide rear wheel #s
0.84. For those feeling generous, or feeling there are higher drivetrain losses,
an 18% loss may be used, and calculations performed by dividing by 0.82.

PS.. There WILL be a dyno day part III.. you'll just have to wait 'til NEXT YEAR!
