ASC light on dash - causes?

Folks:

I own a '96 328ia.
The ASC warning lamp came on yesterday after driving
for 20 minutes or so.

I know the car is not being damaged, but
what are the causes of the light coming on?
Faulty circuit/sensor? 

I read through the Unofficial E36 site for info, but couldn't find any.
