E30 Reverse Light Switch

Hello,

The reverse light stopped working in my '88 325i with manual
transmission. I traced the fault to the reverse light switch mounted on
the gearbox. I purchased a new switch from the dealer and when I tried to
replace it, I could see no way to do it other than dropping the
transmission. 
My question is: a) is there a trick to replace the switch? or b) is there
a special tool that will fit the tight space?
Suggestions are welcomed.
