E-30 Won't Start Hot

Tonight my '88 325iC would not start, for over an hour. I had run it about 
five miles, shut it off and tried to restart two minutes later. I tried at 
ten minute intervals and than waited about forty minutes when it started 
right up. I was stopped on an uphill if that matters. I'm sure the engine was 
flooded. I'm looking for any ideas to assure that it won't happen again.
