fuel fumes from back seat

dudes:

i remember a while back that someone reported smelling gas fumes in their
E36 M3 interior, & that the culprit was a bad fuel sender from the gas
tank.

could someone verify the old post & if that was the right explanation?
(you can guess why i'm asking). tia.
