E30 struts

Hi all,
I'm swapping in E30 M3 springs into my 325 eta. I've
done the rears a month ago. Just took off both front
struts yesterday and springs are separted. 
When I took off the shock boot on my driver side. Two
hand fulls of rust chips spilled out. WTF, the part of
the housing where the collar nut threads into looks
eaten away pretty bad. When I tilted the shock liquid
oozed out of strut housing below the collar. I think
the housing is corroded to the point where there is a
crack right below the collard nut. I havent' even
attempted yet to take the collar nut off. But as it
appears my driver side strut could have sheard off
anytime.

Has anyone experience this kind of wear on an E30? Any
one have a source for used strut housingf? About How
much? 
It looks like I need to replace the bearing if I get a
used housing, where can I get the thin walled 36mm
socket?
