84 528e - Motor woes

I've got an 84 528e that has recently experienced a meeting of the fluids - the water's full of oil and the oil's full of water.

I've got the head off, and there are no oil-water vectors obvious on the head, block or gasket.  I knocked the pistons out expecting to see a broken cylinder wall, but everything looks fine there too.  We're not talkin a LITTLE leak here, we're talking CATASTROPHIC failure somewhere.  When I drained the oil pan I took two gallons of water out before I got to the oil floating on it.

Obviously there is more here than meets the eye, but does anyone have any knowledge of weak spots in this engine that would cause this kind of failure?  I haven't pulled the block out yet and consequently haven't been able to examine it thoroughly but I would have expected to have seen the problem by now!
