This is a common problem with E30 BMWs. I had the same problem in my '84
318i. The problem is cracked solder joints inside the instrument
cluster. Remove the instrument cluster from the dashboard (if you're
careful, you can do it without taking off the steering wheel). Take it
apart. This is a good time to check the condition (read: replace) the
rechargable batteries on the SI board. Check the solder joints on the
back of the PCB. Resolder if necessary. Replace the rechargable
batteries while you're at it.

On a different subject, my '84 318 has bit it, and I'm selling some parts
from it. I have a Pioneer in-dash CD-player with BMW wiring harness for
sale along with four 6 1/2" Kenwood 2-way speakers which fit perfectly in
E30 BMW mounting holes in front and back (no drilling required).

I also have 4 16" TSW Hockenheim R wheels with Dunlap SP Sport W/10
tires. Wheels/tires have less than 3,000 miles on them and are in perfect
condition. The wheels/tires cost $1200 new.

I am located in Santa Barbara, CA, so if you are located in LA/Central
Coast area, we can arrange something so that shipping costs aren't
involved.

Thanks,

Erik.
