E28 "Clunk"

I have an 87 535is. When I release the clutch I sometimes get a very lound
"clunk" from the rear of the vehicle. I do not feel any unusual vibrations that
suggest differential problems and the mounting all seems to be secure. I have
notices that the axle carrier to trailing arm link bushings are completely shot.
I also know that the problem is not the exhaust banging the undrside of the car,
as I had the same problem when doing a test drive with open headers (scary
loud!).
Has any other digester had a similar experience with the "clunk?" If so, what
was the problem and how was it fixed?
Finally, I have a set of wheels which I very much want to put on the 5er and I
am sure they would fit with spacers. I have had some sticker shock by the H&R's
that I have seen. Any experiences, resources, etc for cheaper alternatives?
Thanks,
KT
