Too Weird?! (Electrical Problem)

I would appreciate comments on the likely source of a suspect electrical
problem.
The symptoms are intermittent and random with bangs or screeches that
come from my radio (or CD player). The bang is very loud, as if a rock
hit my windshield. The screech is also very loud and sounds as if
someone were dragging the needle stylus across a record (some of the
older folks, like me, will recognize what that sounds like.) After the
bang, the radio goes dead. Then if I turn it off and back on, the sound
will return -- for the process to repeat itself after a few seconds to
several minutes.
I would appreciate any ideas where the likely source of this problem is
so that I can narrow the focus of my search for a cure. [I think I'm
going to take it to a specialist.]
On the lighter side, this reminded me of pleasures associated with
tracking down electrical problems. Many years ago, I owned a MGB and
sold it after about 6 months because of a series of electrical problems
that caused the car to die or becoming very sluggish. I was told I
needed to replace all the wiring to fix the problem. Later, I
discovered this was a common problem with this car. Someone said to me
later -- what did you expect from a car with Lucas electronics?
Afterall, wasn't it Lucas who invented the three-way switch -- on, off
and intermittent.
Private replies will reduce bandwidth for the entire list. Thanks in
advance for your help.
