I had a similar problem with my 94 525I (e34). All the same symptoms as you
describe. I was losing about 1/2 gallon a month, didn't know why. Finally
took it to my dealer, turns out I had a small crack on the upper part or my
radiator where the plastic and metal join. It was blowing out the top when I
was traveling at highway speeds for a consistent amount of time. I thanked
him very much for his $600 estimate and purchased a radiator from BMP Design
for $269 and put it in myself. That did it, no more coolant leak. I don't
know if your 87 has a similar type radiator but it's another possibility.
