Re: Advice on 1992 750iL

This is the kind of model which might put you off another BMW... :-(.

The thing with these cars is that they basically have two 6 cylinder engines
in them. The two banks run almost independant. There are two ECU's, two fuel
pumps, blah blah blah. It can limp home in 6 cylinder mode if something goes
wrong (It can shut down one half of the engine and still run!)

So there are twice as many things two replace on the engine, but still just
the one drive train.

If you have money floating around it might be OK to buy if you REALLY like
it. I would opt for the V8 or 6 cylinder though (Be careful of the V8's
too - some US versions have trouble with the sulfur in the fuel causing bore
corrosion check some of the FAQ's)The i (instead of iL) is a little bit
shorter and therefore lighter, so you may want the SWB version with the
smaller engines (though I believe they still go well in iL guise).

The iL has amazing rear leg room, while the i is ample. Perhaps a 5 series
(sedan or wagon) may suit you? They are a bit lighter so still have
brilliant performance from a smaller engine.

The 750iL tends to sell quite cheap because of the very limited market it
appeals to - higher than average running and maintenance costs, and VERY
big.

There are a few owners here on this list, and some will say the costs are
horrendous, while others will say they are OK, considering the cars
capability and function. It all depends on perspective :-)

Still, it *should* be cheaper than a new car to to run, when you consider
the initial purchase price and the level of vehicle your are getting...

Just beware... A car brought second hand, which cost a small fortune new, is
still going to break things, and the price of the parts may very well
reflect the original new car price.
