E36 Inspection 1

Hello all,
My 97 328I is getting close to another one of those scheduled inspections.
The last inspection i had to pay for ~$500.00. Just wanted to get some
general opinions as to why I should/shouldn't bother with it.  Besides a
simple tune-up, it seems awfully expensive to have someone kick your tires
and call it good.
