Chris:
Well, there is good news and bad news on your Getrag question.
What? Oh, you want the good news first? Er, well, uh, you didn't
mention any actual *symptoms* that suggest the need for a rebuild.
The things that would cause it to need to be opened are like serious
'chinking' into gear, particularly second, implicating your 'baulk rings'.
Another would be if it pops out of gear. If it is just a *bit* baulky,
you can try RedLine MTL synth - it has really helped out several
Getrags of mine in the past. The front and rear seals (if needed) are
easy to replace; given access! The shifter shaft seal frequently leaks.
The *bad* news? These transmissions are reputed to be very difficult
to disassemble without the BMW special tools. There is a shop here
in the States that specializes in Getrag rebuilds, and observes that a
large portion of their work is to recover transmissions seriously damaged
in the attempt to open them - cracked cases, mostly.
Hope this helps! Larry F.
