Raymond... In regards to your 1986 325 sound system:
speakers;
If you mean by "premium" sound system, one like your '87
535i that has amp. in the trunk,you have a balanced system that may simply
need newer than 14 year-old speakers to sound well.Careful what you replace
in that so you don't unbalance sound and make it worse.If you only have
two-way 5 1/4 inch speakers in round opening on rear deck, and no extra
amp., you need more and better sound.You can use slightly larger,more
powerful speakers in the same opening,or cut(always my last option) a bit
larger whole.6x9 on the rear shelf will look a bit odd,leave room for the
sun to dry them out, and blow out the ears of any rear seat passengers.6"
round, or 4x6 (what I used without cutting-raised speaker grille w/shim
instead.)May be more than enough for you.If not,try 3rd placement...cut
speaker grill opening in the steel upright panel under the rear seat,and
install speakers under seat facing forward,using large(4x6 or 6x9 or
5x10)size speakers.If this is added to new speakers for current
system,should be enough to blow out windows,but NOT rear passengers.Don't
forget to replace fronts to balance sound, and use resistors to balance 4
rears power to 2 fronts by themselves.Have fun.
