Ignition switch replacement ('83 533i)

Hi all,

Does anyone have any pointers for replacing the ignition switch on a
533i?  I tried it and, at first, it didn't seem like a bad job (should
have been my first warning), but I still managed to break the
replacement switch beyond repair and need to shell out for another
one.
