Performance Chips

I have been considering putting a chip in my 1987 325iS. I have read
countless advertisements, dyno charts and various other forms of
information. Honestly I would like to know what people who have used
various chips have experienced. What performance gains where given by which
chips? Are they worth the investment? Anyone's opinion of any chip would be
appreciated.
