Yes the 318 motor actually the M42
had some gasket problems, their is an updated gasket that keeps them from
belching coolant for no apparent reason, If this service is performed their
is nothing to worry about, or get a car made after '94 then you get the
updated M44 Motor 1.9litre vs. the original 1.8 and a good bit more torque..
either way these cars are a blast, probably the most nimble 3 series you
will ever drive

Hello.
I've just subscrobed to the list.
I was thinking of buying a 318 is (either E30 or E36). One main
concern is engine durability. I have heard that this engine (s42?)
has a problem with gaskets and timing belt? Can anyone englighten me
on this?
