<E36> What is this pump for?

Hi,

I have a 96 328i. There is a pump/fan with a long air hose/snorkel coming
out of it right behind my right front shock tower. I notice it occasionally
runs when the car starts and shuts off after a couple minutes. What does
this unit do and how often should it run. It seems like I used to only hear
it every third or fourth time I started the car, now I am hearing it almost
every time.
