I went to Gateway Tech in St. Louis this weekend.  At the Tech Rep sessions, 
the subject of oil, changing and intervals was discussed extensively.  They 
all said that for new BMW's, one should only use the BMW synthetic oil.  The 
new variable VANOS system has some very fine passage ways in it and mineral 
oil could clog up the passages.  They also said they think one should change 
oil 3 - 6 K miles instead of waiting for the approx. 15 K service interval.

There was a mixture of opinions on whether to change the new lifetime AFT 
fluids.  It seems that the problem is that BMW identified that overfilling, 
underfilling and stirring up the tiny pieces of metal (that have deposited 
themselves in harmless out of the way nooks) is much more serious than any 
degradation of the fluid.
