Light turn off delay, 1984 533i

     Last year I purchased a 1984 533i.  The car has performed well and I am
pleased with it.  However, during the early months the internal lights would
remain illuminated for about two to three seconds after I closed the door.
Recently, the lights stopped working as previously described.  My
question(s)
1.	Did the delay in turn off occur as a malfunction or are the lights
designed to behave that way.
2.	If the delay is suppose to occur, how do I fix it.
